Trump Endorses Romney

It's 58 degrees and windy today in Las Vegas, and suddenly Romney has the wind at his back and he has dreams of smooth sailing through the next few rounds of primaries.

Donald Trump, citing similar views on OPEC and China has endorsed Mitt Romney as his choice for the Republican Nomination.

They'll all looking pretty presidential up there with all those American Flags. You'd never know they were in Vegas.

I posted this pic above because it's the way most American's sitting at home are seeing this event. Close up shots of Romney and his wife smiling at Trump, smiling back at the happy couple. A nice, cozy shot where by the King of Vegas, TV shows and Real Estate is trying to crown them as the Golden Couple that will become the next First Couple of America. To Donald Trump his endorsement seals the deal.

Will it?

Possibly. Probably. Hard to say for sure.

In the end it will be Romney's to lose.

The only constant about the future is that it is hard to predict.

The weather is easier to predict.

Then again the rain that was supposed to fall in North Carolina today did not fall, and sunny blue skies reign supreme instead. So, warm in fact that I went outside barefoot. Nice.



Kings come and go. In 1946 Bugsy Siegel opened the Flamingo Hotel. He changed a small desert town into the town that we know it today. As always, he found out the hard way that construction never goes as planned, it always takes longer. Not everything went the way Bugsy had hoped, he died a few weeks later.. well "died" is not exactly the right word to use but he did die in the end. Vegas, his dream city, went on to be as popular a getaway today as he knew it would be back when.



Why? Because of the weather.I mean it's called "The Flamingo" which brings up images of tropical destinations with palm trees and tropical birds. Except for a few days in the winter when it snows on rare occasions the weather in Vegas is always beautiful. That and people like to go there to gamble, lounge around the pool, gamble, enjoy the sunshine and palm trees and gamble. A winning combination.

Today, in the middle of winter on a day when the temperature flirted with 60 degrees and the sun was shining outside Mitt Romney got his time in the sunshine on national television.

Only history will say whether this was a turning point for Mitt Romney or President Romney. Only history will tell.

Super Tuesday will be on March 6th, 2012. It doesn't take a hedgehog to tell us that there will be 4 more weeks of intense campaigning, but by March 7th we should know if Romney is in fact the Republican candidate for President.

All Eyes On Two Cities Today - Puxatony PA & Las Vegas NV

The weather was 32 and overcast this morning when Puxatony Phil saw his shadow and predicted 6 more weeks of winter.

That really all depends on where you live. Growing up in Miami, two blocks from the ocean I never could understand the whole Groundhog Day thing.

After having lived up north several times through very cold winters I began to slowly understand the concept of longing for Spring. However, weather is all about location and whether you are reading this from Santa Monica Beach or the Starbucks on Ocean Drive on Miami Beach... it depends on the weather in your area.

I predict the far NW will continue to have at least 6 more weeks of winter. The Deep South will continue to have spring like storms and possible tornadoes. The East Coast will continue to have a mild winter. And, people all across America will continue for the next 9 months to hear about why we should change our Commander in Chief or whether to hold onto him for another 4 years.

For the next hour or so we will hold our breath to see if Donald Trump sees his shadow in Las Vegas where he makes his big announcement this morning or then we will spend the next 6 hours listening to the media explain why he:

Endorsed himself.
Endorsed Mitt Romney
Endorsed Newt Gingrich
None of the above

Everyone seems to be in Nevada today.

Ron Paul was there recently and he barely makes public appearances anywhere relying instead on his teams of libertarian/republicans to trump up support for him around the country and on campuses everywhere.

Santorum is in Fallon, Nevada today where it is much colder than it is down in Las Vegas where there are sunny skies and it will be around 58 degrees when he makes his big announcement today. Currently, it's 20 degrees and cloudy in Fallon where he will be appearing at the Churchill County Museum and Archives at 4pm. Later this evening he will be back in Reno speaking to the Republican Jewish Coalition.

You might want to check out that museum if you are in the area ever...looks like a fun place to spend a few hours while on a road trip. It's other name is the Best Little Museum on Highway 50. Check it out, especially if you have wondered what it was like to live out west in real life not on a TV Show made in the 1960s.

One thing I will say for Santorum's campaign that I like is he gets around, he works the small towns. In today's world of media assaults on TV, Facebook and Twitter it's gets around the town and talks to the every day people...and children.



8 year old Paul Knipmeyer got to ask a question of Rick Santorum, something I can promise you Paul will remember a lot longer than Santorum. It is events like these in small towns off the beaten track that keep the regular people of America interested in politics, it's not all about winning New York, California and Florida.

Santorum enjoyed warm weather today while speaking at Lone Tree in Colorado, it was 51 degrees and much warmer than it will be tomorrow when the golf course will be covered over by snow.

Sharron Angle, a Tea Party favorite has endorsed Santorum this evening. Still, it would be hard for him to reset and upset Romney in Nevada, a state that supported Mitt overwhelmingly in 2008. Still, bit by bit the endorsements should help.

Politics is like the weather in Chicago, if you don't like it today...wait a few days and it will most likely change.

Michelle Bachmann did NOT follow Huntsman's game plan and endorse Mitt Romney today. She did however go on National Television to remind people she is in Washington and Mitt Romney is in Minnesota today and they are not meeting. I watched her on TV where she emphatically denied making any immediate endorsements, saying and I quote "I talk to all of the candidates on a regular basis, that continues but I haven't yet made a decision who I will endorse"!

Of course, that is not to say that while in Minnesota Mitt may have met with some people close to her. I mean, three months ago Jon Huntsman called him a weathervane and not a very nice weathervane at that!

Let's see how the political wind changes when it comes to endorsements over the next few weeks.

This morning Mitt Romney was the hottest speaker on the morning news being interviewed everywhere on the topic of his large victory yesterday in Florida. Tonight, he is once again the hottest speaker being asked to explain what he meant by his quote this morning on CNN when he said he doesn't care about the "very poor." To be fair, I think he explained it very well... he's worried on the large percentage of people who are neither very poor, or very rich...however his words will be used time and time again by his opponents against him.

Newt Gingrich was hot on his trail trying to get the same guest shots to throw Mitt's off the cuff comment back at him....

I'm leaving a link to the song "Money" here but remember what is more important than the lyrics is to remember the history behind the song. The story Cabaret shows Pre-War Berlin through the eyes of the characters in the play who work at the Cabaret. That song always made me nervous. I've always loved the play, but that song always made me feel tense when watching it, because it was the failure of the economy in Germany that led to the rise of Hitler and the events that led up to World War II.

While enjoying music from Cabaret remember the songs may be fun to listen to but Germany was not a fun place to live during that period, people took refuge for a few minutes of fun at the Cabaret. A musical reminder that money does make the world go round and when money is tight and people are poor and desperate bad things can happen.

Great song from a great movie with a message that is still relevant.

It's always about the economy as Bill Clinton knew. We talk about the weather, we talk about the Super Bowl ... but in the end money talks and many a candidate will walk away from a race because he runs out of money. And, many a candidate can stay in the race because money is not a problem for him.

Let's see what The Donald says tomorrow and how it may or may not change the political winds of weather....or not.

If there's one wild card this year in this election... it definitely could be Donald Trump.




And one last thought...

Everyone really needs to lay off Matt Drudge because he seems at times to prefer Mitt to Newt, that's his prerogative. He is a powerful man that has brains and money and just like anyone else he can use his website however he sees fit. It's a free country with freedom of speech. The case can be made that Romney won in Florida because he greatly outspent Newt Gingrich or he simply put in a great debate performance and Newt Gingrich did not. Drudge can spend his time and money the way he wants to and so can Romney ...or Donald Trump. Were some of his headlines a little "mean" or "punchy" last week? Yes, that's why people love to go to his site every ten minutes to see what he has to say. Does he show some of the best pictures on the web to highlight his stories? Yes, he does. He's just being Matt Drudge. Had Newt Gingrich turned in the performance in Florida that he did in South Carolina the results from the Sun Sunshine State might have been different.

I do disagree with the headline though that they will live or die in Miami, because it seems Donald may have a few things to say tomorrow and it's not over until the fat man sings or however the saying goes.

Sunny Day for Ron Paul In Vegas while Romney Courts Minnesota

Mitt Romney takes to the campaign trail today in Minnesota, rather than dashing off to Maine or Nevada. Why Minnesota?

Good question, but Rick Santorum was there two days ago so it seems to be a pretty important place to go these days.



For Santorum he may be playing towards his strengths in a state where much of it's base is in line with Iowa where he had his biggest victory so far. Luverne Minnesota is just across the border from Iowa, a beautiful part of the country I've spent time in and where Santorum's more populist appeal is indeed popular.

For Romney, he may be looking to show off his support of Governor Tim Pawlenty and shore up support by receiving an endorsement from Michelle Bachman. An article in the Boston Globe illustrated how supporting Mitt Romney was good for Tim Pawlenty as he has received large donations from Romney insiders (including Ann Romney as well as Mitt himself) that helped pay off his campaign debt. Possibly, it suggests, Romney is hoping Michelle Bachman can also offer her support as she struggles with her own campaign debt and re-election campaign. To be fair, Bachman's debate coaches have done more for Romney than they did for her during her short lived campaign, so maybe he owes her a bit as well.

The weather will be overcast today for Mitt, but temps in the 40s in Eagan in early February are downright balmy.

The emphasis on Minnesota is a big puzzling as it is basically a straw poll and their delegates are not bound by the results of the upcoming vote on February 7th, after the Maine and Nevada primary where few people are campaigning today. So, the question does beg asking... Why is Romney in Minnesota today? Was his appearance at the Freightmasters Building so important to his campaign or is this a strategic trip for him as he looks for support from Minnesota's own Michelle Bachman?

Santorum, back in his signature vests, did well speaking before friendly crowds in Minnesota a few days ago. Can he keep that up in other parts of the country further from his support in that part of the heartland?

Ron Paul will be in Vegas where the sun will be shining and his supporters will be happy as always about their solid support in this ongoing process. Ron Paul seems to be the winner today in having the best weather on the campaign trail anywhere as the temperature will hit 69 degrees and it will be more hospitable than if he had gone to Maine today where the weather there is a wintery mix of snow and ice in Bangor, Maine.

From Minnesota, Romney moves on to Colorado. Will he have Michelle Bachman's support when he leaves the state? That is a bigger question than what the weather will be when he leaves...

The Sun Shines on Romney in Florida

The State of Florida gave Mitt Romney the big victory that he hoped to achieve as his monolithic campaign organization covered the state with TV commercials and radio ads as well as filling the Internet with pictures of Romney on every site from weather to astrology to banking. I couldn't so much as look for an evening gown today, without having Romney staring back at me...



That sort of campaign works better with primaries than it does in states where there is a caucus. It will be interesting to see if his big victory in Florida will begin to make Republicans in other states feel all warm and fuzzy towards him and just how he will do in the next three states where delegates are being chosen.

The lack of winter and the issue of gay marriage on the ballot have been a big topics in Minnesota over the last month. It's been so "warm" (warm being a relative term) that they actually had problems at the Winter Carnival with their world famous ice sculptures in the city that gave us F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Being a real Yankee the weather most likely won't be bothering Mitt much as the weather everywhere should seem down right warm for him as he comes off a big win in the sunny State of Florida. We'll see how the voters feel about Mitt and the rest of the pack in Nevada, Maine and Minnesota in the days to come.

What seems not to be hot or even mentioned is that whoever wins the primary only wins half a victory as Florida lost half of their votes by moving up the primary to January and no one seems to care.... we are on the nightly news, the morning news, every news show in America is showing every politician that can get his face in front of the camera standing in front of an out door shot with blue skies, palm trees and usually a blue view of water with the real message being "Come on Down... It's June in January in Florida" and both parties and everyone in Florida owes a big thank you to the Republicans who decided to move up the election to the dead of winter so that their voice can make a bigger impact in the election ;) and we could all gain some good publicity for the Sunshine State.

Because what is really HOT in Florida today is.... the weather ;) and it's on display 24/7 all day as the media covers today's election ... blue skies, tank tops, suntans and dreams of a mid-winter vacation live in the heart of every viewer in Maine who will be voting next week in their own election.

You can't Lobby the snakes out of South Florida, but you can lobby for Trader Joes to move all the way down the state. Seems likely that they will, unless of course they are afraid of the snakes.

Either way... the Florida Sunshine will give way to snowy days in Maine and cool days in Nevada as we move on day by day here towards Super Tuesday where weather can and often is a factor in voter turnout in some of the colder states.

Today, in Florida someone will win, someone will lose. The focus will be more on the point spread than the victor as Romney is expected to win but the bigger question is by how much. Hard to beat a man who is outspending you by the margin Romney is outspending Newt. Almost every site I go to in South Florida this morning carries the following advertisement.



Open up any newspaper, turn on any TV station and you are inundated with advertisements either by Romney or groups supporting Romney attacking Newt Gingrich. What a boost to the local economy this election has been indeed, not only has the Sunshine State looked beautiful on nationwide TV but millions have been pumped into the media marketplaces with ads by Romney. Thank you Mitt Romney for pumping up the advertising revenue of almost every media market or website in Sunny Florida.

What else is hot in the State of Florida is not as much "what" but "who" and that who is Marco Rubio.

Yes, that's what Face the Nation and every other political show this week did ...they showed off Miami's Biscayne Bay, Tampa's Biscayne Bay, Jacksonville's River and the sunshine and blue skies were the backdrop on National TV during the dead of winter up north. Behind the candidates who spoke their sound bites about the economy, beating Obama, jobs, the changing of the Republican Party by the Tea Party members the .... and everyone watching is thinking, "wow, look at that sailboat and the water...."

Everyone hears the sound bites, but what they are thinking is "I could be there when I'm here..." or "maybe I'll check out Jet Blue's sales this week and take a quick trip down for an early Spring Break."




Everyone is talking....but what everyone is watching is Santorum sans his signature vest working the crowds in short sleeves. Michelle Bachman in a pretty white suit showing off her great legs looking like she's doing summer while Allen West sits near her in an orange windbreaker making people everywhere wonder on what he is wearing under neath that wind breaker, an ORANGE Florida colored wind breaker. He's probably wearing a tee shirt or a tank...wow ...shorts maybe... and it's June in Florida year round. That is the point that the Florida primaries are making this week.



They may be basking in the rays of reality, as Esquire points out, but they are basking in the rays of reality while working on their tans which will give them a nice healthy look going into Maine and Nevada.

Carl Fisher, the oldest most successful Florida publicist back in the Roaring 20s would put up ads in Time Square for New Years Eve that read, "It's always June in Miami" along with pictures of bathing beauties frolicking on the Florida beaches.



Yep, Florida by moving up the primary to January did more than make a national impact in the primary process... they gained millions of dollars of free advertising doing one up on Old Carl Fisher, they showed the candidates walking through crowds of people dressed for summer, under the palm fronds, in front of the water, live on TV with boats going out on day trips and people on the boats waving to the crowds having fun in their bathing suits. While watching Allen West speaking on the election, a little part of their brain is thinking..."wonder how much it would cost to take a cruise out of Miami..."





And, that is how the State of Florida is the biggest winner this January while Romney and Newt duke it out in the polls. Note...while duking they are often in their short sleeves getting in some nice rays of sunshine before heading back up north to winter. In Maine Santorum will have his signature vest again and Romney won't be showing off his "average man short sleeves" look and Republicans will be dreaming of Marco Rubio on the ballot as a Vice Presidential candidate.

Winter Dreams will be not on the election but on a seat on a plane south bound for some fun in the sun...that is what most people will really take away from this week's primaries.

And, they will head out to Little Havana for some good Cuban food, rent a boat, go to the beach and it will boost Florida's economy because across the board Tourism is King in Florida.

We may have lost the King Orange Bowl Jamboree Parade on New Year's Eve, but we won back the media's attention in the dead of winter with the January Primary.
